Designing timber connections is critical to ensure the structural integrity of timber constructions. Revit 2023 software has completely overhauled the analytical modeling workflow. Now the physical and analytical models have the freedom to act independently. Modern structural optimization based on reducing materials has facilitated improvements for some structures like canopies and bridges. However, when applied to buildings, these approaches to optimization are less appropriate, as they can impact internal building layouts, frustrating our architectural colleagues. Procedural generation—a method for using algorithms to generate geometry—when combined with more familiar structural optimization like Generative Design in Refinery, offers us a new methodology that can drastically reduce the complexity of the problem. It achieves this by mimicking human processes and applying them to the option generation process, such as aligning the building's structural frame with key features in the building layout, like cores and atria. This technique also offers the opportunity to include multidisciplinary constraints by adjusting the building structural frame to match the position of internal features, such as internal walls and corridors.

The Royal Artillery Barracks Olympic Shooting Range was one of the standout arenas created for the London Olympic Games. Located in a traditional setting, this facility caught the imagination of competitors, spectators, and the public, and it demonstrated the power of Building Information Modeling (BIM) in project design, manufacture, construction, and disassembly. There was a focus on workflow to empower disparate parties to embrace real collaboration. The use of technology was essential to achieving high-quality design. We created a 3D structural model of each building, which then became a hub for coordination with temporary frame contractors, manufacturers, and other designers. In this class, we illustrate the workflow used to take the generative models built using Rhinoceros® software into Robot™ Structural Analysis and Oasys GSA to perform structural design and then into Revit® Structure software using the Geometry Gym BIM plug-in.

This class will show you how to use the Robot Structural Analysis software's comprehensive API to simulate complex structural problems and thus improve efficiency and provide feedback loops. We will review several examples where the API has been used to link Robot Structural Analysis software to other software in order to speed up model generation and help create complicated geometry models with a high level of accuracy. We will show you tips, tricks, and effective practices for generating models that run efficiently, and you will discover how to use the API to extract results in order to provide optimization feedback loops. We will also show you how to use such functions as Result Query and Cache in Microsoft Visual Basic to access data within Robot Structural Analysis software. We will use at least 1 example of this type of workflow to demonstrate how quickly you can create scripts to link software such as Grasshopper to Robot Structural Analysis software, and then continue through to Revit software to produce project documentation and images.

You've created design using utility design software, but now you wonder if you can exchange the model data with advanced engineering tools to enforce regulatory and integrity checks. This lecture will attempt to show you how to integrate a utility model used for distribution, transmission, and substation into advanced engineering tools like O-Calc, SPIDA, Robot Structural Analysis software, and Advanced Steel software. We will also discuss the capabilities of APIs to exchange data between design and analytical tools so that you can plan your integration and extend your utility's workflow without copy/paste data.

Utilizing the Frame Generator within Inventor Professional software, we will open a machine support structure to demonstrate an improved workflow for design. First we will suppress the machine model elements and then we’ll modify the frame to show how to improve timeliness of the analysis. Next we will perform a quick frame study within Inventor Professional software for the natural frequency and stress analysis. Then we will push the model directly to Robot Structural Analysis software to do some advanced analysis and loading. Finally, we will discuss optimization of the support structure. Throughout the presentation the discussion will focus on how to design a “stout” structure while not wasting time or material. This workflow will prove to be repeatable and efficient back at the office.

In this class, we will introduce Sensequake sensing-based structural analysis. We have developed advanced software and sensors to provide professional services and a turnkey solution to engineers and asset owners. Our patented technology performs structural health monitoring and seismic assessment solely based on actual data from highly sensitive vibration sensors—saving engineers time, effort, and money—all while providing superior results. This allows for the detection of hidden defects and undocumented structural modifications not detected by visual inspection and traditional engineering practices. In this class, we will explain how sensing technologies can be used for periodic and permanent structural-health monitoring. The assessments are based on very accurate sensing tests, without the need for a finite element (FE) analysis. In fact, our sensing results can be used to calibrate FE simulations build by Revit software, Robot Structural Analysis software, or other FE packages.

This session will present the Rwanda Institute for Conservation Agriculture and The Ellen DeGeneres Campus of the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund as case studies. We’ll discuss the rigorous research and testing required to validate the structural use of earth, timber, and lightweight-concrete construction. We’ll also explore how these designs were documented to assist construction workers in implementation, to assist supervisors by highlighting critical structural elements, and to assist designers in an analysis of environmental impact.

To set the stage for the Robot Structural Analysis software demonstration, we will first complete a review of composite-beam-design theory and AISC 360-10’s composite-beam-design implementation and requirements. We’ll then demonstrate how you can access and install the composite-beam-design extension for Robot Structural Analysis 2016 software. We’ll conduct an in-depth examination of the composite-beam-design extension, detailing all of the features and uses by exploring composite-beam-design examples from actual projects.
