Data-driven design in architecture has the potential to drastically enhance the quality of projects. It's not solely focused on enhancing the end result; data-driven design also streamlines the architectural process itself. It goes further than just streamlining tasks; it's about improving the quality of living environments and assuring sustainability. In this session, we'll tell the story of the journey involved in designing a residential building. By combining data from various sources, we looked at the most-optimal options for a case we studied in Warsaw, Poland. Among these sources are passive solar design, green roofs, wind analysis, building materials assessment, energy use efficiency, resource conservation, and waste reduction—reducing carbon footprint. Additionally, we incorporated some urban-scale geographic information system (GIS) data. All of that would not be possible without Autodesk Forma software, which played the critical role. For us, the role of an architect will never be the same after this journey.

Through harnessing the capabilities of its API, we've seamlessly integrated Forma with other essential programs in our toolkit. This integration empowers architects to extend the advantages of design and information insights to all stakeholders within our ecosystem. By leveraging the synergies of Forma, Revit, Speckle, and Power BI, we've crafted a workflow devoid of information loss, offering a comprehensive project overview accessible and beneficial across the entire value chain.

Mechanical modeling in Revit software entails creating graphical information in 2D and 3D. However, the efficacy of mechanical systems lies in comprehensively analyzing the nongraphical information within the model. This session will showcase how to analyze every duct and pipe segment in mechanical systems to meet design constraints. We will demonstrate how to ensure that every part of a mechanical system is logically and physically connected for optimal performance. We'll illustrate system flow and engineering inspections within mechanical intelligent models in Revit. And we'll showcase how to size mechanical equipment to overcome every system pressure standing in the way of best performance. The session will also demonstrate the extraction of information from intelligent models for optimal performance and design improvements.

This year—2024—was a significant year for VRED software, marked by numerous enhancements and new features. We started with a comprehensive UI redesign, reflecting Autodesk's guidelines for a modern, intuitive experience. And we introduced improvements, such as multiselection property editing and searchable preferences, boosting speed and efficiency. We launched many new features, balancing technical precision and artistic freedom, providing a platform for visually compelling and accurate designs. In line with industry advancements, VRED integrated open standards, including IFC, USD for data exchange, and MaterialX and MDL for seamless material exchange across applications. VRED also introduced OpenVDB for volumetric data processing from simulation applications, and OpenXR for a wider range of hardware support, including hand and marker tracking capabilities. In this presentation, we'll guide you through the changes from 2024 to 2025, providing an overview of the key updates shaping VRED 2025.

With new technologies emerging, we're always on the road to explore the digital factory. In this class, we'll share the best practices and approaches regarding the digital factory. First, drive increased efficiency of the factory design and optimization based on CAD workflow and FlexSim process simulation, which is essential for the digital factory. Next, ensure the objects can be tracked throughout the whole lifecycle; we built a "Factory Object TAG Rules" system for digital delivery. Finally, connected IoT devices help realize digital twins to streamline, automate, and predict tasks. And we explore AI to reinforce human intelligence so that it can achieve more.

ECOFACT is a €12 million Horizon 2020 project aimed at developing an ECO-innovative energy FACTory management platform for four demo sites: Arçelik (white goods industry), Athenian Brewery (Heineken brewing company), Gullón (biscuit factory) and Tofaş (a body painting plant of Stellantis vehicles). This platform features a dashboard that includes an LCA/LCCA module based on SimaPro and an Energy and Resource Management System (ERMS) built on Autodesk Platform Services. The ERMS consists of a Digital Twin Platform (DTP) that combines industrial digital twin models of production lines and machines with simulation and optimization tools into a single web environment. Using an advanced IIoT infrastructure, each digital twin streams real-time field data to ensure user-friendly monitoring. Managers and operators can run simulation and optimization applications integrated into the DTP for improved factory management in terms of energy, resources, and costs.

This session will showcase a new workflow of creating a factory layout in Autodesk Factory Design Utilities software and using FlexSim to validate the throughput of the layout, identify potential bottlenecks, and balance resource use. The platform features advanced simulation and predictive machining tools for optimal tool selection and process parameters, using MSC's proprietary data to enhance operational forecasts. It seamlessly integrates with Fusion 360 for streamlined process planning and analysis, creating a unified manufacturing experience. Additionally, the add-in offers robust data analytics to generate actionable insights, improving productivity, tool performance, and operational efficiency. This initiative represents a transformative approach to manufacturing, combining technological advancements with a commitment to sustainable, people-focused processes.

The industry is responsible for a significant part of the global GHG emissions from energy. It is crucial that modern organizations understand energy use in their production facilities. Energy-use planning should consider not only the total amount consumed, but also timing—taking into account intermittent renewable generation, dynamic pricing, and variable CO2 intensity. On-site generation and energy storage cannot be evaluated without a model of the production process. FlexSim is a simulation product that has been used in manufacturing applications for more than 20 years. Flexcon Helios extends general-purpose FlexSim and can specify power requirements for different phases of any process modeled in FlexSim. The simulation can predict a realistic power curve, and the Flexcon Helios module allows users to define a dynamic policy on how energy sources are used. If coupled with an intermittency model, dynamic pricing, or CO2 intensity data, this approach can assess the total costs and carbon footprint of the process.

How efficiently are your products getting from production to warehouse to shipping docks? As you consider new factory designs to improve these material-handling processes, it's critical to have a complete understanding of how your resources and processes interconnect. When Cardinal Glass wanted to optimize its material handling to minimize shipping delays from the factory, the company used simulation with FlexSim to validate its proof of concept and discover new improvement opportunities. The simulation helped to rebalance the workload and identify a reconfiguration that led to a 29% decrease in shipping operation time. This also formed the basis for a digital twin that enables real-time optimization of warehouse goods storage and dock assignments, with daily assignment, location, and maintenance recommendations.

Industrialized construction: The goal is to accelerate the pace of delivery, increase schedule certainty, and improve the flow of work. Owners and project teams are increasingly using "pop-up" near-site prefabrication facilities to achieve these outcomes. However, the promise of industrialized construction is not achieved simply by shifting the work off-site. Entering the prefab environment presents unique challenges, notably in line layout optimization, material flow, and workload balancing. Easley and Rivers—in collaboration with ICG Consulting and powered by Autodesk FlexSim technology—learned to bring together craft expertise to mitigate these risks with tried-and-true lean manufacturing methods and industrial engineering best practices. By using discrete-event simulation, the team has not only improved the reliability of delivery to the field, but it's also significantly enhanced production standards.

In the spring of 2024, the legendary Jeff Smith connected Associate Professor Bush from Auburn University with an OEM partner to explore what it would look like to team a group of graduate industrial design students with a seasoned digital vehicle designer. Through this interaction emerged a five-week section in Alias AutoStudio software and a five-week section in VRED software, using the Auburn instructor's background in surface modeling with the OEM partner's background in SubD and mesh modeling. This proposal compares the CAD instruction methodology that has been implemented at Auburn University for the past three years with the experimental, collaborative approach with the OEM. We will highlight the changes in student outcomes, as well as the implications of knowing SubD/hybrid modeling moving into the design profession.
