The additive manufacturing (AM) industry continues to grow, doubling in size roughly every five years. With this also comes an increasing environmental footprint. AM holds many promised environmental benefits. From lightweight parts for electric vehicles and reduced material consumption through optimized designs and flexible localized production, there’s no shortage of potential. However, many caveats remain. How do you print parts that perform better and last longer? Is the lightest part necessarily the most sustainable? How can we design not just for the printing process, but also for post processing, shipping, and the entire product lifecycle? In this class, we’ll look at design technology and case studies that will provide insight into these questions. We’ll also cover how you can start putting these technologies and workflows into practice to turn promised sustainability ideas into reality—while avoiding common pitfalls.

Autodesk Fusion 360 software is arguably one of the most feature-rich and affordable CAD tools on the market. But some people still think that there surely must be a catch or a compromise. Well, we’re here to show that Autodesk Fusion 360 is an innovative CAD tool and can easily do what traditional CAD tools can do, plus a whole lot more! Using a real-world example of a complex, component-heavy design for a physically huge 3D printer built simultaneously at the University of Warwick and Autodesk’s Birmingham Technology Centre, we’ll show how Autodesk Fusion 360 handled deeply nested subassemblies of electromechanical components designed with both top-down and bottom-up modeling strategies. We’ll show how Autodesk Fusion 360 effortlessly empowered the project team to streamline the whole of their design and development process, collaborating in real time and taking their designs from concept all the way through verification and documentation onto manufacturing through seamless integration with computer numerical control (CNC) systems.

Data Exchanges transfer granular information about models hosted in Autodesk Construction Cloud in a neutral format that allows you to build automated workflows across apps and services. You’ll learn how to create Data Exchanges from Revit software in Autodesk Docs software, and build data flows to Microsoft Power BI using the new bridge to Power Automate. These data flows—traditionally made with sophisticated API investments—are now more accessible to nonprogrammer users.

This makes an easy-to-handle workflow for mass production very important, especially when you’re running a job shop. Powered in large part by Inventor software, company team members can now take an assembly modeling approach when designing racking systems for customers, which helps them work faster to win more deals. It all began with a simple Dynamo script displaying a popup window to users with some useful information about the document. As the script development advanced, we transitioned to a Revit macro. The tool grew and even more features were added to assist users in managing their model's quality. Eventually, our team reached a point where the macro wasn't practical enough. That's when we created an installable C# add-in, turning the former model health check into a comprehensive wizard with an Autosolve function. Now, many common errors are automatically resolved when Revit starts or syncs, leaving only more complex issues for users to review. Dedicated windows within the tool have been designed to help users evaluate logical errors, such as area analysis. The wizards toolkit is complemented by a robust automatic classification function. This course guides you through our development journey, unveiling the wizard button's magical potential and the insights gained along the way.

This hands-on lab will introduce engineers and designers to the world of using CAM to program computer numerical control (CNC) machines and its connection to the design process. Through a series of guided exercises in Autodesk Fusion CAM, you'll gain practical experience in setting up stock material and coordinate systems, choosing tools, defining machining operations (including machining boundaries), simulating the toolpaths, and generating G-code for a CNC milling machine. This session will equip you to better communicate with CAM programmers and optimize your designs for manufacturability.

Generative design is often seen as a new design methodology. However, the key principles of the process mirror the fundamentals of design. In this class, we'll present a case study of how generative design is being used at University College London (UCL) to reinforce the core design curriculum through industrially relevant technology. During this class, you'll gain an understanding of the generative design process, see how you can apply it in an educational setting, and evaluate its use through a real-world example. We'll explore how we can use generative design for multiobjective optimization, and how this can be turned into a hands-on graded assignment that forces students to consider real-world requirements. This will include evaluations of student submissions and analysis of how effective this assignment was at teaching the principles of design, as well as course materials for you to take away and use while running similar teaching exercises.

For most people, one of the first things you were taught as a kid was how to share with others. Sharing is caring, right? It turns out that the older we get, the less we remember the teachings of our youth. In the design world, we are constantly reliant on the data of others, and they're reliant on us. We live in a world where many people are still working locally and emails still reign supreme. Cloud tools have unlocked the possibilities of collaboration, but if everyone isn't contributing, these tools are no better than the email threads of the past. A design mistake costs a lot less than a construction mistake, and good data-sharing practices can mitigate many mistakes from making their way into construction. Out of these concepts and challenges, some major questions arise: When and how do we share with others? How often should we share? And how do we make sure that all project information is available to everyone? These are the questions we hope to answer, and we hope you'll join us to learn more!

A cross-industry technology fusion! We used Autodesk Generative Design software to create an adaptive connector bracket for robot-operated 3D scans of ancient structures. ReCap software and Dynamo helped us study traditional construction methods and enrich our restoration efforts. This report covers our process in Autodesk Fusion 360 software, including entering design parameters and extracting constraints from the historical site. It explains how we turned the bracket's requirements into criteria for rapid iteration and selection, quickly finding the best solution. It also explains how ReCap processed robot-collected point cloud data to investigate architectural principles and features of ancient buildings in Southern China. Finally, it describes how Dynamo converted these insights into automated building information modeling (BIM) scripting, bridging historical knowledge with modern technology for efficient restoration practices.

This session will cover the fundamental Autodesk Fusion workflows necessary for using the Fusion Manufacturing Workspace. Pre-learning will include searching for Fusion Post Processors and Machine Simulation Files on the HSM Posts Landing page to help users obtain the correct tools needed to generate their required NC code for machining components. The session will also explore Modelling for Manufacture workflows, briefly covering the Design Workspace, but focusing on Manufacturing Models and their manipulation. Attendees will then learn about basic machining strategies within Autodesk Fusion, available in the Base version of the software. This session aims to provide attendees, particularly new and exploratory users, with a basic understanding of the Autodesk Fusion Manufacturing Workspace and the qualifications required to use it as their future CAM solution.
